1907 $20 High Relief, Flat Rim -- Removed From Jewelry -- PCGS Genuine. Fair 2 Details. At first glance, this remarkable High Relief double eagle seems impossible to exist. In our 30+ year archives, the lowest certified High Relief coin we have handled is a single VG10 PCGS example. That coin looks boldly defined compared to this oh-so-smooth High Relief with Fair 2 details. PCGS suggests the piece is ex-jewelry, but in our estimation it could just as well be a long-held pocket piece. Perhaps the owner was a well-heeled golfer who used this coin as a ball marker, in and out of his pocket many times throughout the day depending on how well he handled the short stick. Or, if the piece was held within a bezel, it may have been rubbed often for luck and carefully wiped from time to time to maintain its shine. We simply do not know. It is nearly inconceivable to think the coin circulated long enough to show this much ordinary wear. There is a contingent of collectors who seek out coins that receive the lowest-possible grades. Typically, those coins grade either Poor 1 to Fair 2. Desirable attributes include even and natural wear that still reveals an identifiable date and/or mintmark, even if barely readable. The design elements are often almost smooth. PCGS CoinFacts notes "Low Ball Collecting" is an emerging numismatic area over the past few decades. Some collectors and dealers were chasing low ball coins as early as the 1980s. This MCMVII High Relief is seemingly as low as it can go for its type and is in many ways the ultimate prize for those who ascribe to the low ball mentality, or simply view the coin as a unimaginable show stopper (which it is).
