(1800) Medal Washington Funeral Urn, Silver, AU53 PCGS. Baker-166A, Fuld 1-B, Musante GW-70. Ex: Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Holed as issued. Newburyport, Massachusetts engraver Jacob Perkins prepared several sets of dies for the Washington Funeral medals. Most are similar to that offered here, although a rare variety exists with GW below the urn, and another rare variety is identified with a skull and crossbones motif instead of the urn on the reverse. Neil Musante notes advertisements for the Perkins medals appeared as early as January 3, 1800. Fuld 1-B was struck in gold, silver, copper, and white metal. All are reported to have a Plain Edge, although this example has at least a partial edge device -- seemingly engrailed or with slanted reeding -- while other edge areas appear to be plain. The PCGS holder makes it challenging to describe the full edge treatment. This pleasing AU53 silver example has a deeply toned bluish-gray obverse with silver luster peeking through along the margins and occasionally through small windows in the oldtime obverse patina. The reverse is lightly toned and reflective, displaying colorful iridescence. About two dozen pieces are known. PCGS Population: 7 in 53 (1 in 53+), 10 finer (8/26).
