1794 50C O-102, T-8, High R.6, Fine 15 PCGS. Silver centers are highlighted with significant charcoal-gray peripheries, complemented by sage-green, mustard-brown, and steel-blue. Surfaces are free of abrasions on both sides, and wear is even. Most surviving examples of 1794 half dollars are concentrated among a few die marriages: by far the most common is the R.3 O-101, T-7, and most of the rest are the R.5 O-104, T-11 or the O-105, T-3. Other die marriages, like the present High R.6 O-102, T-8, represent a small fraction of survivors. The present offering is not listed in Steve Tompkins' 14-coin Pictoral Census & Pedigrees of the O-102, T-8 in his landmark 2015 book on the series. The grade distribution of this very rare die marriage skews significantly to the low end of the Sheldon scale, as is the norm for half dollars of this year, and the present Fine 15 example is tied for third finest known in that census.
