1795 $5 Small Eagle, BD-5, R.7 VF20 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The flag of 5 is recut and the 1 in the date touches the curl. Diagnostic spikes extending from several reverse dentils suggest the dentils were punched and then hand finished by the engraver, with several lengthy slips. The BD-5 die marriage is an exceedingly rare variety, with the other 1795 S over D Small Eagle five (BD-6) many times more available. This well-worn BD-5 example is an exciting discovery, since it is apparently missing from our roster of eight to possibly nine known examples. Despite the assigned VF20 grade and considerable circulation wear across the central motifs, this minimally marked orange-gold example is smooth and attractive. This is only the sixth 1795 BD-5 half eagle we have handled since our earliest auctions during the past 50 years or so. The coin remains housed in its Gen. 4 fatty NGC holder and is sure to be a significant addition to any early half eagle collection. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
