1839-C $5 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Winter-1. The 1839-C half eagle is a one-year type coin and the first Charlotte issue to introduce Christian Gobrecht's initial Liberty Head design. The C mintmark above the date is unique to this issue since the mintmark was removed to the reverse in 1840. This issue is often seen in VF to XF grades, the issue of just 17,205 becomes scarce approaching Mint State. This example with AU sharpness is generally well-struck and shows grade-consistent wear on the devices. The green-gold surfaces are bright and lack original mint luster, suggesting a past cleaning and minor tooling as noted by the PCGS Details holder.
