1797 $10 Large Eagle, BD-4, High R.4 -- Cleaned -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b. This is the usual die state for the BD-4 Large Eagle ten. An earlier die state exists lacking die cracks at R and C of AMERICA, but those cracks are bold on this example. Likewise, an advanced obverse crack exists through the second 7 in the date to help confirm the late die state. A single obverse die is shared among all three 1797 Large Eagle reverses. This BD-4 example is peppered by tiny marks and abrasions including a short reeding mark at the neckline. A shallow rim bump rises below 79 in the date. Visually pleasing orange-gold surfaces are a bit bright and glossy from the noted cleaning, yet any hairlines are minimized by the numerous marks from circulation and handling. BD-4 is the sole 1797 variety that has the unusual looking Long Thick Neck on the eagle. The early Mint experimented with long and short thin necks before the BD-4 variety apparently convinced the Mint to employ the Short Thin Neck for subsequent years in the series.
