1838 $10 AU58 NGC. The ten dollar denomination was struck for commerce in 1838 for the first time since 1804, but the mintage was only 7,200 pieces, and few were saved for numismatic purposes. PCGS states only "80 to 100 [are] known." The first-year Liberty ten is one of two issues (along with the 1839/8) of the "Covered Ear" subtype with a forward-leaning head and a prominently curved bust truncation. At NGC, the median grade is AU50, but this is a near-Mint example numerically exceeded at NGC by only a single coin (9/26). The peach-gold surfaces show considerable luster. The strike shows minor blending on the star centers. A lens reveals scattered small marks, none of which are worthy of singular mention. NGC Census: 11 in 58, 1 finer (9/26).
