1839/8 $10 Large Letters, Head of 1838, AU58 PCGS. CAC. While the Large Letters vs. Small Letters designation is difficult to discern, the Head of 1838 obverse provides many easier ways to confirm the type. Christian Gobrecht's sharply arcing, pointed bust truncation and star 13's position beneath the truncation quickly differentiate the Head of 1838 from the Head of 1840, Small Letters design. Traces of an underdigit 8 exist on this 1839/8 example outside the left-side curve of 9. Although the upper stars are characteristically rounded on the 1839/8 issue, the strike is otherwise sharp on this near-Mint, CAC-endorsed example. Tiny marks pepper the lustrous, orange-gold surfaces. PCGS Population: 8 in 58, 18 finer. CAC: 2 in 58, 5 finer (8/26). From The Christensen Family Collection.
