1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS63 PCGS. The terms "Wire Rim" and "Wire Edge" are often used interchangeably for the early-production 1907 High Relief double eagles, although "Wire Rim" is arguably more accurate. The fin of metal that circumnavigates much of the border on each side of these coins is not an artifact of the edge collar itself but one of the fit between the new segment-style collar and the dies. During the multiple die impressions necessary to bring up Saint-Gaudens' design in full relief, metal from the planchet was able to squeeze into the space, creating the fin. A remedy for the issue came in adjusting the planchet upset, so that it took longer for metal to reach the gap and avoid the "fin rim" altogether. However, shortly thereafter, the High Relief design was retired overall. This Select Wire Rim example displays bold definition and rich peach-gold luster, with no bothersome abrasions besides those minor marks in the fields and on Liberty that define the grade.
