1852 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous., XF40 PCGS. CAC. K-11, R.5. The 1852 Humbert slug is among the earliest coins issued by the Assay Office that year, as alterations were made to the design following Curtis, Perry, and Ward taking charge. The entirety of this initial design would have been struck in January, given that the takeover occurred in February 1852.      This piece displays deep harvest-gold luster with some lighter overtones around the rims. The strike is strong and retains good detail in the wings and a decent portion of the shield, though wear is as expected for the grade and has diminished the eagle's sharpness. Marks are scattered throughout, with some larger abrasions most prominent on the reverse. The issue is scarce in all grades, with only 21 coins seen finer at PCGS and only eight CAC endorsed beyond the present piece (8/26). Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. Listed on page 425 of the 2027 Guide Book. From The Christensen Family Collection. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
