1852 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous., AU53 NGC. K-11, R.5. Curtis, Perry & Ward took charge of Moffat & Company in February 1852, about one month after the Kagin-11 1852 Humbert Reeded Edge fifties were struck. Donald Kagin suggests the 1852 Humbert fifties comprise the scarcest major variety of all Reeded Edge fifty dollar varieties, with only about 75 examples in private hands. This About Uncirculated example has the AUGUSTS HUMBERT UNITED STATES ASSAYER OF GOLD CALIFORNIA 1852 outer legend, not to be confused with the Spring 1852 Reeded Edge fifties (Kagin-13) where the border legend changes to UNITED STATES ASSAY OFFICE OF GOLD SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA 1852 struck during the Curtis, Perry & Ward tenure. This is a well-detailed AU53 example showing lightly abraded orange-gold color and partial gold luster. A rim knock on one right-side corner and numerous small obverse edge marks confirm time spent in the rugged Gold Rush economy. Moderate wear exists on the eagle motif, while the engine-turned reverse has only minor marks. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. Listed on page 427 of the 2027 Guide Book. NGC Census: 6 in 53, 17 finer (8/26). From The Christensen Family Collection. HID06601242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
