British Colony. George V Pair of Certified "S.S. Camberwell" 10 Rupees 1916 Note Fragments Genuine NGC, Calcutta branch Office, Pick A10g. Accompanied by COA's. Salvaged from the "S.S. Camberwell" (sunk in 1917 off Isle of Wight, England). The S.S. Camberwell was built in 1903 to carry goods between India and England. During WWI, this route became more important – but also more dangerous. In 1917, she struck two mines just five miles off the Isle of Wight, laden with 5,000 tons of goods after just leaving port on a trip to Kolkata. The ship listed to starboard and sunk within minutes. All crew, most of whom were Indian Merchant Service men, made it onto lifeboats, but one lifeboat capsized and all seven men on board were lost. The wreck site was discovered 53 years later and a myriad of general cargo has been found, including pre-paid postcards and 10 rupee bills. HID07901242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
