Newport, Rhode Island Payment Order £3 July 2, 1768 PMG Holdered. This completely handwritten order, whose maker was Jonathan Cooke, requested Rouse J. Helme, a prominent merchant, to pay £3 in "sterling money of Great Britain" to Thomas Vernon, a Loyalist Tory who would later be banished from Newport during the Revolutionary War. It appears that an extra charge of 6s-9d was added for some type of charge paid to The Boston Chronicle, a loyalist newspaper published from 1767-1770 before the publisher fled the country for Great Britain. the order shows minimal signs of light handling.
