Low Serial Number 490 Malaya Board of Commissioners of Currency 1 Dollar 1.1.1940 Pick 4a KNB3b PMG About Uncirculated 53. Malaya's first series of paper notes were dated 1940, and comprised of three denominations: $1, $5, and $10. The green $1 and the blue $5 were never officially entered, since some of the stock shipped from London to Singapore and Penang were lost at sea or seized. Some examples were lost close to land and actually washed ashore to be collected and used in those nearby towns. This example appears to have made it to Malaya safely, but was stamped "NOT LEGAL TENDER SPECIMEN ONLY NO VALUE" after it was decided that the $1 and $5 were not to be issued. At the time of writing, a mere 20 overprinted examples are present in the PMG Population Report with minor rust mentioned for accuracy. Rare and extremely popular.
