Low Serial Number 490 Malaya Board of Commissioners of Currency 5 Dollars 1.1.1940 Pick 5a KNB4b PMG About Uncirculated 53. Malaya's 1940 series was the first of notes issued after the final series of Straits Settlements notes, which were dated 1935. Interestingly, some portion of the stock of $1 and $5 notes made it successfully to Singapore and Penang, while other portions of the stock did not. Some were lost at sea near shore and washed ashore, while others sunk to the bottom of the Indian Ocean. The stock that safely arrived was never issued, and a new series of notes dated 1941 were issued in 1945, after Japanese occupying forces were expelled at the end of World War II. This incredible $5 of 1940 is from the first brick of notes printed, and due to the decision not to circulate this note, it was overprinted and cancelled in red. Just a bit of folding and foreign substance are mentioned for accuracy. The overprint "NOT LEGAL TENDER SPECIMEN ONLY NO VALUE" is bold and clear. A minor paper pull is seen in one side margin. We have not offered this extremely rare type in the past and it is part of an incredible collection of Straits Settlements and Malaya notes offered in this auction.
