Southgate Coins and Collectibles is located in scenic and historic Reno, Nevada. The Reno retail store succeeded the owners' Las Vegas Rare Coin Gallery in southern Nevada. The Las Vegas store closed its doors of operation in August 2001, at the location it had occupied for 30 years, when the landlord of the shopping center announced he would be demolishing the buildings.
The new store opened in Reno as Southgate Coins on September 11, 2001 (the same day as the terrorist attacks). The owners, Marie and Rusty Goe, used the experience they gained through many years in the rare coin business to equip and furnish the new showroom with as many of the coin collector amenities as possible. Visitors were impressed when they entered the shop with how attractively it was furnished.
The Reno store closed at the end of 2016. This resulted from the landlord leasing the building to a dental service organization for twice the rent Southgate Coins was paying. This forced the Goes out.
The firm's website at www.southgatecoins.com carries on the business once operated at the "brick & mortar" store. During the past four decades, the Goes (Rusty & Marie) have assisted scores of hobbyists in their collecting pursuits.
Rusty Goe has teamed with collectors to build some of the finest sets of Standing Liberty Quarters of all time. The "Nevada Collection" of Standing Liberty Quarters is currently listed in the PCGS Registry Sets as one of the top all-time finest sets. Goe has also assisted clients in acquiring U.S. coins of all types, spanning the late 1700s to the 20th century.
Specializing in coins from the Carson City Mint, Rusty has assisted collectors in building some of the finest sets of "CC" coinage in history. He has placed some of the scarcest and most celebrated pieces from that legendary institution with his clients. Building sets of coins is his passion in the field of numismatics.
In 2004, Goe's book, The Mint on Carson Street, won Book of the Year honors from both the Professional Numismatists Guild and the Numismatic Literary Guild. Goe released his second full-length book in 2007, entitled James Crawford: Master of the Mint at Carson City - A Short Full Life, a biography of the fourth superintendent of the Carson City Mint. It. too, received an NLG award.
In early 2021, Goe released his third full-length book, The Confident Carson City Coin Collector. For this this 3-volume, 2,500-page work Goe again received dual Book of the Year honors from the Professional Numismatists Guild and the Numismatic Literary Guild. It is the ultimate reference work for the study of the Carson City Mint and its coins.
In August 2012, Stack's Bowers auctioned the incomparable Battle Born Collection of Carson City coins. Goe served as the chief architect in the assembling of this 111-piece complete set of "CC" coins, only the second such set ever built (as of yearend 2022).
Some of the other notable "CC" coin collections Goe has assisted in building include the Sierra Biker Collection (Heritage August 2021), the Rian's Bequest Collection (Heritage January 2022), and the Navy Mustang Collection (Heritage August 2022).
Rusty and Marie Goe have appraised, purchased, and sold millions of dollars worth of rare coins and currency through the years.
