The 1857-S Liberty Head Double Eagle PCGS MS-65 Spiked Shield is an impressive San Francisco Mint issue that combines exceptional preservation with a distinctive die variety. According to Stack's Bowers listing for this coin in 2024, This coin is from the S.S. Central America, although this provenance is not noted on the PCGS insert. PCGS has graded 619 examples in MS-65, with only 158 finer.Rich satin luster blankets both sides, while vibrant rose-gold color gives the surfaces an especially attractive appearance, becoming slightly deeper around the borders. The fields are remarkably clean for a large gold coin of this era, and the design elements are boldly impressed with crisp detail throughout.
