The 1797-Lima IJ Peru Silver 8 Reales is a remarkable survivor from the great era of Spanish colonial coinage. Certified NGC MS-63, this scarce Lima Mint issue boasts an impressive level of preservation. Only 37 examples have been graded by NGC, with just 4 certified in MS-63 and a mere 1 finer, placing this coin among the elite known survivors of the date. Its bright luster and lack of chopmarks further distinguish it from most comparable pieces. Significantly, PCGS has graded none in mint state.Known as the famous “Carolus” or “Bust” dollar, the 8 Reales served as one of the world’s premier trade coins during the late eighteenth century. The vast majority were exported to China, where many received chopmarks from merchants and shroffs. At the same time, the coin circulated widely in early America, where it was commonly known as the “Spanish dollar.”Its historical importance extends to the founding of the United States. In his Report on the Establishment of a Mint (1791), Alexander Hamilton used the Spanish dollar as the model for the new U.S. dollar. Rare, unchopped, and exceptionally lustrous, this impressive 1797 Lima 8 Reales would make an outstanding addition to an advanced collection.
