2021 Long Beach Expo Marks Return of Major Coin, Collectibles Shows in Southern California

As the world slowly emerges from the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, life is beginning to return to some semblance of normalcy. The gradual shift from lockdowns and safer-at-home orders to appreciably larger events has also been welcomed by so many in the numismatic world, which went about a year without any major coin shows being held.

The world’s most valuable coin was sold by Sotheby’s in June 2021 for nearly $19 million.

A The 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, which broke an all-time record in June 2021 as the most expensive coin ever traded in public auction, was recently encapsulated by Professional Coin Grading Service ( This comes after PCGS graded the coin MS65 just prior to its sale at a Sotheby’s auction on June 8, 2021, for $18,872,250, or almost double the previous record set by a 1794 silver dollar graded by PCGS that sold for $10 million in 2013.

Coin of the Issue: 1907 High-Relief Wire Edge Saint-Gaudens

“Overrated.” “Common.” “There are so many at any large coin show.”

These are words that I often hear when I proclaim to folks that the 1907 Saint-Gaudens High-Relief Wire Edge Double Eagle is America’s greatest coin. I think to myself, “they don’t understand!” To me, the beauty of the design and the story behind the creation of the coin is what makes it so special.
