1850-O $20 XF45 PCGS. CAC. Winter-1. Ex: The Fairmont Collection. The 1850-O double eagles served a dual role as the first New Orleans Mint double eagles. Portions of the 141,000-piece mintage circulated widely along the river trade and in regions west of the Mississippi, while others were exported to Europe. Doug Winter reports 16 1850-O twenties were part of The Fairmont Collection, the finest of which was graded AU55. This is an attractive XF45 coin from that well-known gold hoard. Reportedly, nine of the 16 1850-O Fairmont hoard double eagles received CAC endorsement including the present example. This Choice XF coin displays rich greenish-gold coloration with prominent reddish obverse accents. The strike is sharper than often seen on this O-mint twenty. It exhibits only widely scattered, shallow marks from handling and apparently little actual circulation wear, if any. Glints of the original prooflike surface survive alongside partial mint luster to provide pleasing eye appeal, as recognized by the accompanying CAC approval. PCGS Population: 98 in 45, 96 finer. CAC: 23 in 45, 22 finer (8/26). Ex: The Fairmont Collection-Kronen Set (Stacks Bowers, 11/2023), lot 5274. From The Christensen Family Collection.
