Die state O-101.2. The only known die marriage for the issue, this piece showcases die clashing on the reverse thereby making this O-101.2. The most popular denomination with depositors through the mid 19th century was the half dollar. The Mint was not prepared for the renewed demand after the war of 1812 and did not have any 1815 dated dies on hand. So, in order to resume coining as soon as possible, Mint employees retrieved an unused 1812-dated die, punched a 5 over the 2, and used this obverse to strike approximately 47,150 1815/2 half dollars. I bought this from a very sharp dealer who was trying for XF40 and gave up but I can absolutely understand why he felt this was a legit candidate for XF. Absolutely original and NOT cleaned with wonderful surfaces and detail that certainly indicate a very strong VF grade if not XF. Dove gray with underlying blue as well as hints of pale gold. Really lovely coin I would stack up against a 40 anytime.
