Ball 158 Cr. 118 £500/12,500 Francs/20,000 lbs. Cotton 1863 Bond Very Fine. This is a fabled bond issue of the Confederacy as it was floated overseas in London and the Continent with the backing of the Erlanger financial empire. All of these bonds were in fact signed by Baron Emile Erlanger. Also, the Erlanger bonds are signed by Confederate diplomat John Slidell. He and James M. Mason were one of two Confederate diplomats captured by the United States Navy from the British ship RMS Trent on November 8, 1861. They were released two months later by the Lincoln administration. At Provincetown, MA, they continued on to London by way of the British Navy and shipping. At top center is an embossed British revenue stamp. HID08101242017 www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
