1794 50C O-101a, T-7, R.3, VG8 PCGS. The O-101 die pair is by far the most frequently seen die marriage among the 11 known 1794 varieties. Most of those coins fall under the O-101a later die state umbrella, with a die crack visible through F in OF. Compulsive collector Terry Brand accumulated a vast number of 1794 half dollars, many of those in well-circulated grades, but apparently this one housed in a Generation 3.1 green label holder escaped Brand's notice. Deep brownish-gray toning in the fields surrounds light-gray raised devices for a pleasing "circulation cameo" appearance. Light abrasions and tiny ticks exist but this first-year half dollar is free of heavy abrasions or any visible adjustment marks. The reverse dentils are fully intact and about 75% of the obverse dentils survive on this well-defined VG8 example. From The Cole Carter Collection.
