PSA Teamed with NFL to Guarantee the Authenticity of Super Bowl LV Game-Used Items

February 9, 2021

PSA authenticated each of the 120 footballs that were earmarked for use in Super Bowl LV.

PSA also authenticated the pre-game coin toss coin that was used prior to the start of Super Bowl LV.

Tampa Bay, FL (Feb. 9, 2021) – Super Bowl LV (55) turned out to be a rather lopsided showdown between the reigning Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs and the NFC Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  After all the passes were thrown on Sunday, it was the Bucs who prevailed 31-9 behind the arm strength and leadership of now seven-time Super Bowl Champion QB Tom Brady.  But before any snap was taken from center, the battle against fraudulent SB55 game-used memorabilia was already underway, thanks to PSA.

Behind the scenes, in its ongoing efforts to combat fraudulent sports memorabilia and counterfeiters, Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) “tagged” with synthetic DNA ink each of the footballs that were scheduled for use during Super Bowl 55 as well as the official two-tone coin that was used in the pre-game coin toss.

“It’s always our distinct pleasure to team with the NFL to ensure the authenticity of each of these game-used items,” said PSA President Steve Sloan.  “Our proprietary technology allows us to stay far ahead of the counterfeiters.”

As it has since the turn of the new millennium, the NFL entrusted its on-field, anti-counterfeit measures to PSA, the world’s largest memorabilia authentication company.  Prior to the game at Raymond James Stadium, an official PSA representative marked each of the 120 footballs (12 kicking balls and 54 balls each from both teams) and the coin toss coin with the company’s proprietary synthetic DNA, visible only when illuminated by a specific laser frequency.  The nearly unnoticeable marks serve as a counterfeit deterrent and are virtually impossible to replicate as each marking has a 1-in-33 trillion chance of being reproduced.

A portion of the PSA-authenticated items will be auctioned off on www.nflauction.nfl.com to benefit the NFL and various team charities and non-profits.  The remaining items will be split between the Chiefs and Buccaneers organizations.

PSA is the world’s largest trading card, autograph and memorabilia authentication and grading service.  Since 1991, PSA has examined and certified over 40 million collectibles with a combined value of over $1 billion.  For additional information, visit www.PSAcard.com.
