PCGS Price Guide Provides New Feature - 2-Year Pricing History
- May 27, 2009
Which coin has performed the best or worst in the past two years?
The best coin performer between May 2007 and May 2009 is an 1896-O Morgan dollar, graded PCGS MS61 Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL). Check your closet to make sure you don't have one lying around!
The bad news is there are only three coins graded MS61 DMPL by PCGS. Not to mention, Morgan dollar collectors are known to be some of the most dedicated collectors, so sales of such coins are few and far between.
The 1896-0 Morgan dollar is notably one of the toughest coins to find with DMPL surfaces. It's been years since this coin from this date and mint mark has made an appearance in a public auction. However, one did make an appearance at auction in August 2008. A total of six bidders competed hard and strong until the coin finally realized $18,000.
The PCGS Price Guide reflected the changes following the close of the auction. The price listing of the coin jumped to $18,000 from its previous listing price of $4,500 on the PCGS Price Guide (a 300% increase within two years). Now, don't you wish all your investments made that kind of jump?
