Win an ANA Summer Seminar Scholarship Courtesy of ANA and PCGS

- December 8, 2010

The American Numismatic Association and the Professional Coin Grading Service are jointly offering tuition, meals, lodging and airfare for two lucky PCGS Set RegistrySM members to attend a week-long session of the popular ANA Summer Seminar in Colorado Springs, Colorado this year.  But you have to act quickly; the deadline to enter the contest is January 31, 2011.

The scholarship program is open to all participants in the PCGS Set Registry, according to BJ Searls, Set Registry Manager.

"Winners will be selected based on their set display online in the PCGS Set Registry. To enter, submit a self-nominating e-mail to [email protected] with a brief description of 200 words or less about why you should be selected for a scholarship.  Be sure to include the name of your set and a link to it in the Registry," Searls said.  "Your set description should include historical information about the set or series, and historical information about each coin within the set. Images should be included."

The deadline for submission of nominations is Monday, January 31, 2011, and the two winners will be announced a week later on Monday, February 7, 2011.  The early date is to ensure that the winners have the entire curriculum to choose from before classes are filled.

"Summer Seminar is the best educational experience in numismatics," said ANA Executive Director Larry Shepherd.  "Our students learn from the best instructors in the hobby, interact with fellow numismatists, make new friends, expand their knowledge and each year, find something new to get excited about."

This year's two ANA Summer Seminar sessions will be conducted Saturday, June 25 to Friday, July 1, and from Saturday, July 2 to Friday, July 8.  Winners can select which seminar session they want to attend and design their own curriculum from available classes.

The 2011 ANA Summer Seminar catalog with detailed descriptions of this year's available courses and additional information about ANA Summer Seminar is available online here.

As part of this scholarship project, the ANA will cover tuition, meals and six nights lodging at the double-occupancy room rate, and PCGS will provide roundtrip airfare to Colorado Springs for the two winners.

"Numismatic education is crucial for our hobby and the hobbyists.  We encourage PCGS Set Registry members to take advantage of this opportunity to expand their knowledge and enjoyment of collecting," said Don Willis, President of PCGS, a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT).

Here's what last year's Summer Seminar Scholarship winners had to say:

Gerry Fortin: "The ANA Summer Seminar is an incredible opportunity for serious collectors to enhance their grading or counterfeit detection skills and to meet a broad cross section of folks in our hobby/industry."

"As a result of your scholarship, I met with Ken Bresset and we are discussing an approach for the Liberty Seated Club to help Ken revise the seated coinage sections of the Redbook.  He complained about lacking a consistent seated coinage advisor since the death of Kam Awash.  I hope to work with LSCC peers to fill that gap."

"Again, thank you to PCGS for opening another facet of my hobby.  I will be back to ANA Summer Seminar in the future."

Jim Bucki: "Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to attend the 2010 ANA Summer Seminar through the PCGS Set Registry contest.  For years I have looked at the ANA Summer Seminar catalog and dreamed if I would ever be able to attend.  Being a man of modest means and raising six children, it was never a financial possibility.  With the monetary support of The ANA and PCGS I was able to experience the one of the greatest weeks of my life which otherwise would not have been possible."

"From arriving at the airport and being greeted by 'Tiny,' to the classroom, to mealtime, to the 'Lunar Lounge,' I always felt welcomed by everyone I met.  Although numismatics brought all of us together, I quickly realized that the most important part of this experience would be the lifelong friendships that were forming. At the closing banquet Don Bosner summed up the overall experience when he said 'where else can you go and feel like you're a kid again? Coin Camp!' "

"The Intermediate Coin Grading class I took provided me with valuable knowledge that I intend to pass on to the youth members of our local coin club, The Buffalo Numismatic Association (BNA), and to the Boy Scouts who attend my Coin Collecting Merit Badge workshops in the Western New York area.  Meeting two Young Numismatists in my class gave me the opportunity to learn more about the YN experience.  I intend to encourage a particular youth member of The BNA to apply for a YN Scholarship for next year's seminar."

"My experience at the seminar has deepened my understanding of numismatics, produced new friendships and created an ambassador for the ANA and the Summer Seminar Series.  Once again, thank you for this incredible experience!"
